Building Sustainable Growth with The Flavor Continues

The Flavor Continues (TFC) was one of Bloom Arts Strategy’s very first clients. In spring 2023, with support from a capacity-building grant from The Boston Foundation, TFC made a pivotal investment: they decided to bring on a fundraising partner to help chart a long-term strategy. Their goal was clear — to generate more sustainable funding while staying deeply rooted in their community values.

The Challenge

TFC is a true grassroots organization: led by members of the community they serve, guided by a shared leadership model, and fueled by trust. Their programs serve a tight-knit, highly engaged community. But traditional fundraising tactics weren’t resonating.

When Bloom Arts first partnered with TFC, we rolled out some of our standard strategies — lapsed donor campaigns, personalized email appeals, and e-blasts. The response was underwhelming. It became clear: TFC’s supporters weren’t in their inboxes. They were in community spaces and on social media.

Our Approach

Instead of forcing a one-size-fits-all model, we pivoted — tailoring a fundraising strategy that matched TFC’s identity and donor behavior.

  • Meeting People Where They Are
We shifted emphasis toward platforms that resonated, experimenting with Patreon and monthly donor giving programs that offered tangible benefits, community connection, and recognition. When those proved too resource-intensive, we streamlined into a single monthly giving program — more manageable for TFC, more impactful for donors.

  • Strengthening Stewardship
We built new systems for donor cultivation and acknowledgment. A standout: handwritten thank-you notes for loyal donors. This practice not only delighted supporters but also felt deeply aligned with TFC’s values — a personal, authentic expression of gratitude that leadership enjoyed doing.

  • Evolving Language for Funders
As TFC’s work evolved, so did the way we wrote about it. Early on, messaging emphasized peer-to-peer learning, mental health, and community. Over time, we refined the language to characterize TFC as stewards of intergenerational connection, cultural preservation, and legacy — positioning their programs within the broader context of history and humanities. This shift has resonated strongly with funders.

The Results

In just over two years, our partnership has:

  • Generated $140,000 in new grants while sustaining previous funding levels

  • Established stronger donor stewardship practices that authentically reflect TFC’s values

  • Streamlined donor programs that align with their community’s interests

  • Positioned TFC as a leader in cultural preservation, strengthening their case with funders

Why It Worked

This was never about dropping in a cookie-cutter strategy. Instead, it was about listening, testing, and evolving — finding the balance between revenue growth and authenticity. TFC’s leadership embraced experimentation, and together we learned what worked, what didn’t, and how to align fundraising with the spirit of the community.

The Takeaway

The Flavor Continues is more than an arts organization — they are guardians of culture, lineage, and liberation. Our partnership with TFC has shown that sustainable fundraising isn’t about forcing tactics; it’s about building systems and language that amplify an organization’s true voice.

At Bloom Arts Strategy, we’re proud to walk alongside TFC as they continue to grow their impact — from community spaces to classrooms, and everywhere in between.
